African fashion like never before: I Run JHB

A blend of unique African fashion like never before: I RUN JHB!

Co-Founders of I RUN JHB. On the left:
King Leeu, on the right: Neo Gabhadiya

“The duty of our brand is to tell African stories through clothing and that’s the mandate of the brand and that’s what makes it unique from other street brands.” said Neo Gabhadiya.

With labels popping up every single day I RUN JHB is a fresh unique authentic clothing brand alive with a feel and fuse of African traditional wear and urban strict culture. Neo Gabhadiya Simelane and Wandile King Leeu the Co-founders of I RUN JHB, who were also students at the University of Johannesburg are two creative and innovative young men who still believe in bringing up an African take on modern fashion and are here to up the fashion stakes of Mzansi.

I RUN JHB is one brand with vibrantly coloured garments that speaks the volume and they’ve become proficient in mastering the accuracy of visualization. Most importantly a brand that also looks at its customers preference because the guys put a lot of hard work in making sure that their customers’ expectations are met and not only that but also the passion that goes into it. Here it goes again, starting a clothing line costs a lot of money and these guys take out from their pockets to keep their brand up and running and they don’t have any sponsorship or some sort of financial support and that must be their biggest challenge but hey we talking of go getters. Having said that South African fashion industry is hard to crack with minimal resources these guys proved that there is nothing stopping them from doing what they love. As Gabhadiya said “Effort ke Mahala” meaning effort is free.

Right now I RUN JHB is showcased at different flea markets which include Fox street sidewalks market every Saturday between 10 am to 5pm near Gandhi Square, Braamfontein at the Grove Market on Melle Street from 10 am to 5pm in Johannesburg. They also showcase in Soweto, Orlando west at Locrate Market every 1st Sunday of each month.

For more information on I RUN JHB you can follow them on social media, Facebook: I RUN JHB,

Inspiring NEW opportunities...for sustainable GROWTH
Sci-Bono Discovery Centre
9th & 10th September 2014
The 2014 SEAexpo (Showbiz, Entertainment and Arts Expo), a part of the Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival, is Africa’s exhibition and conference show that connects inter-related creative industries under one roof for sustainable growth. The show primarily brings together a cross section of industry practitioners and opinion makers from TV, film, music, fashion, media, visual arts and crafts, theatre, etc. to network, showcase and share the latest game changing business Developments.

All Systems Go For Durban Fashion Fair

The City of Durban is gearing up for the 3rd Annual Durban Fashion Fair which takes place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) from 21-24 August 2014.

Well known fashion designers, local and international, will share the platform showcasing their exclusive outwear collection on the runway at this year’s much anticipated extravaganza. Amongst the well-known designers who will be showcasing their designs are Massimo Crivelli (Milan), David Tlale, Nguni Shade, Thula Sindi, Africa collection, Zarth, DFF collection (interns) and many more.

Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning Committee, Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala said the City was proud to host such a wonderful event and the positive contribution fashion continued to make in positioning Durban as Africa’s Innovative Smart Fashion City.

“The Municipality has made it possible for our designers to share runways and stages with the world’s best designers, models and have firmly put Durban on the global platform. Thus far, our designers produce some of the most creative and brilliant designs, and soon we hope to see many of them competing with the world’s best,” said Shabalala

Shabalala says the fashion industry remains at the core of the eThekwini Municipality’s efforts to revitalize the textile industry which has a potential to employ many people. “So the DFF is not only about promoting local designers, but it fits in broadly with our economic development strategy and our response to the call by President Jacob Zuma to work even harder to grow our economy in order to meet the basic needs of our people, especially job creation.”

There will be Pop Up Shops with over 50 exhibitors showcasing their products.  On top of that there will be workshops where Dion Chang will be sharing his expertise on fashion.

Tickets to the show are now available at computicket. Entry to the Pop Up Shops (exhibitions) and Industry workshops is free.

Advocacy Workshops for Cape Town and Johannesburg

Advocacy Toolkit Workshops in 2014

Arterial Network South Africa (ANSA) invites applications to participate in one of its Advocacy toolkit workshops to be held on 10 -11 September 2014 in Cape Town and on 25-26 September 2014 in Johannesburg. The workshops form part of ANSA’s Civil Society Campaign funded with a generous grant from the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD).

Overview of Workshops.
Our focus is on strengthening the capacity of organisations in the sector to advocate for issues of concern to them. These issues may include better funding policies, lobbying policymakers on specific issues, lobbying decision-makers for a specific project, challenging the abuse of power or alerting the public to issues affecting artists, creative’s, curators or others working in the sector.

We believe that stronger organisations can better represent the interests of people working in the sector and challenge policymakers to address the needs of artists and creative’s making it happen on the ground.

Moreover, strong member bodies can help build much-needed consensus across sub sectors of the arts, culture and heritage sector in order to be a credible partner to government and business in meeting the cultural development challenges in South Africa.

Participants

We want to develop the capability (knowledge, skills, and behaviors) within the artistic environment required to achieve Arterials Network South Africa’s priorities now and in the future and to encourage individuals and organisations to become proactive leaders in the industry.

We invite applications from emerging leaders in organisations active in structures who are interested to build the case for their creative sector.

If you are interested to participate please submit:

1) a letter of motivation indicating how you wish to help build the capacity of organisations in your field or area.

2) a CV with two contactable references.

Since workshop places are limited, if you have not been contacted by 30 August 2014, please consider that your application was not successful.
