Marine Career Course In April

uShaka Marine World will be hosting a Marine Careers Course in the April
holidays for learners in grades 9/10/11 and 12.

Tsepo Gumede looking into the lens 

The four day course commences on Monday, April 3rd and concludes on
Thursday, April 6th with the daily classes taking place from 8am until 4pm.
This course provides learners with an opportunity to learn more about the
various marine careers by spending time with staff in the Animal Health,
Mammal and Bird and Aquarium departments. They will also enjoy practical
sessions with an ORI (Oceanographic Research Institute) marine scientist and
attend talks on the variety of University requirements required to enter the
various marine fields.

Time of the Writer Durban

19^th Time of the Writer

14 -19 March 2016

The Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) has announced the lineup and programme for the Time of the Writer festival, as well as new partnerships for its 19^th edition.

Ten writers from South Africa and Africa will meet for a week of stimulating literary dialogue and exchange of ideas. Audiences can engage with award-winning writers, from a variety of political and social contexts, on the creative and technical processes and perspectives which shape their writing. Evening readings and discussions will take place at 7pm at eKhaya Multi Arts Centre (KwaMashu), Ohlange High School (Inanda), Umkhumbane Hall (Cato Manor), Umlazi Cinema and Clermont Hall.

This year panel discussions couples authors whose writings share semiotic marrow and are loosely titled after books and papers that echo their literary sentiment.

The Madness of History – Tuesday 15^th March (eKhaya Multi Arts Centre -KwaMashu)

Ashwin Desai and Mishka Hoosen will have a conversation on the importance of retrospective meditations on self, historical figures and the family. 

Why Must a Black Writer Write About Blackness? – Wednesday 16^th March (Ohlange High School)

In this Dany Laferrière inspired panel discussion Panashe Chigamudzi and Eusebius McKaiser share their experiences as writers who write without curiosity’s gaze.

They Write What They Like – Thursday 17^th March (Umkhumbane Hall - Cato Manor)

Crossing the borders from short stories to novellas to poetry to essays, writer Niq Mhlongo gives insight into his unique take on the world across genres and mediums.

Tuning In... – Friday 18^th March (Umlazi Cinema)

Writing for listeners is an art that requires its own stage, a stage of which Christa Biyela and Mandla Ndlovu are accomplished masters. These two audio drama maestros open their lyrical vaults and with it the history and depth of the Zulu audio drama. 

The Alchemy of Fiction – Saturday 19^th March (Clermont Hall)

How pliable is truth? Can one measure the elasticity of the human imagination and if pushed, would one ever erase the self from one’s own story? In this panel, musician turned author Nakhane Touré and Nikhil Singh discuss the roles fantasy, biography and imagination play in the erection of the worlds they create. 

As part of the festival’s focus on decolonizing South African literature the festival will gather leading voices from every facet of literature in the areas of writing, editing, publishing, translation, marketing, bookselling and promotion (including events), to interrogate the central question of how to go about decolonising literature in South Africa, from writing to readership.

Conversations that Matter is a daytime programme of roundtable discussions, led by experts across the various fields of literature, that provides a space for people to share and contribute towards this vital topic ofdecolonisation within literature.

The following topics will be under discussion during the day from 11am.

Conversations That Matter: The Book & Knowledge Production – Tuesday 15^th March 2016 (KwaMashu Library)

To probe the accessibility of literary institutions and the tribulations of those tasked with creating that access, this conversation culls from the experiences of both publishers and distributors. Has the South African literary landscape shifted to accommodate previously poorly documented and valued contributions? Which attitudes delay decolonising access? To open the discussion are Prof. Sihawu Ngubane, Thabiso Mahlape, Kholeka Mabeta, Duduzile Mabaso, Mandla Matyumza, Siphiwo Mahala.

Conversations That Matter: The Book & Readership – Thursday 17^th March 2016 (UmKhumbane Hall – Cato Manor)

To explore questions on readership often posed to booksellers, librarians and festival organisers are Cedric Sissing (Adams Books), Benjamin Trisk (Exclusive Books), Fortescue Helepi (African Flavour Books), Sinenhlanhla Buthelezi (Goethe Library), Tebogo Mzizi (eThekwini Municipality Libraries), Mignon Hardie (FunDza Literacy Trust), Frankie Murrey (Open Book Festival), Dr. Maria Van Driel (Jozi Book Fair) and Jennifer Platt (Sunday Times). This conversation draws on the challenges of pricing, public expectations and historical misconceptions on reading cultures in South Africa.

Conversations That Matter: The Book & Language – Friday 18^th March (Umlazi Library)

An interrogation of the notion of linguistic hierarchies in print media, literature and academic institutions requires contributions from academics and cultural producers whose careers are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of marginalized languages. This conversation will be initiated by Eric Ngcobo, Dr. Mpho Monareng, Dr. Gugu Mazibuko, Dr. Pamella Maseko, Prof. Nobuhle Hlongwa and Wangui Wa Goro.

Conversations That Matter: The Book & Intersectionality – Saturday 19^th March 2016 (Qashane Library)

As a result of recent shifts in the quality of contributions produced outside the academy, the topic of Intersectionality has relocated academics and social commentators alike. The youth are proving to be the aorta of the argument and keeping pulse with contemporary readings on Intersectionality demands the voices of those who bravely tackle this pertinent and inflammatory subject. To open the discussion are Eusebuis McKaiser, Milisuthando Bongela, Nakhane Toure, Lindokuhle Nkosi, Mputlane Wa Bofelo, Mbali Matandela and Zethu Matebeni.

The 19th edition of the festival is presented in partnership with various organisations including the eThekwini Municipality Libraries department whose involvement supports the community engagement programme of the festival by hosting Conversations that Matter in public libraries.

All events are FREE to library or student cardholders. For members of the public without either card, a nominal fee of R20 will be requested at the box office from one hour before the event. The eThekwini Municipal Libraries along with The Centre for Creative Arts will be on hand at each venue in order to aid those without library cards to sign up for one on the spot, all that it requires is a valid ID document and proof of residence.

Durban Seminar for Entrepreneurs and Small Business in Woodwork Industry

ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE WOODWORK INDUSTRY

Small businesses and those that aspire to start a business in woodwork and furniture manufacturing, will have the opportunity to gain more insight on this sector at an information sharing session in Springfield Wednesday, 29/04/2015.

The seminar, which is organised by eThekwini Municipality in partnership with Furniture Technology Centre Trust (Furntech), is targeted at unemployed youth, Small, Medium and Micro Entrepreneurs, and those who tried to establish businesses but were unsuccessful. Participants will get an opportunity to learn more about the carpentry sector and contribute in growing the economy through job creation.

Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning Committee, Nomvuzo Shabalala said, this sector is at the heart of the City’s economy and is the key driver of job creation and growth. Not only does it positively impact in the economy but also plays a vital role in the protection of the environment because it has the potential to reduce carbon emission that causes global warming.

“The Municipality is committed to such programmes to enable us to deal with the triple challenges of high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality. The majority of people who are affected and live below the poverty line are our youth. It is for this reason that the Municipality and Furntech have taken an initiative to support youth who are keen to starting businesses in this sector,” she said. 

Aspiring entrepreneurs and unemployed youth from eThekwini who are between the ages of 18 to 35 and have carpentry skills are invited to attend the session. Participants are required to have a Grade 10 education qualification with Mathematics or Maths Literacy and should be first-time beneficiaries from a similar programme.

DURBAN BUSINESS FAIR LAUNCHED 

THE City has invested more than R100 million towards the Durban Business Fair since its inception and plans to spend about R63 million in the next three years to continue inspiring growth and sustainability to small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs).

This was announced by the Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Nomvuzo Shabalala today, 27/03/15, during the 2015 Durban Business Fair launch held at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre under the theme, ‘Connecting Durban Business Fair Globally’.

This is the 17th edition of the Durban Business Fair.  

The Durban Business Fair scheduled to take place on 16-18 October 2015 at the Durban Exhibition Centre will be preceded by five Regional Business Fairs that will take place in the West, South, East and North Regions. They are scheduled as follows: Hammarsdale Junction on 17-19 April; KwaMnyandu Mall on 22-24 May and Bridge City Mall on 19-21 June. Two additional regional fairs, which will happen in partnership between the City and the Province, will be held at Folweni and Clermont in April and June respectively.

Shabalala said the City decided to increase the number of the Regional Fairs because of the growing interest in the Fair from businesses within eThekwini and beyond. This limited other interested businesses access to be part of this ground-breaking event as it could only accommodate about 500 exhibitors.

“Today the City pride itself of the many success stories that the DBF had produced. This includes ICT business that is operating at a global level, women owned businesses that are operating at national level and businesses that are not only relying on Government tenders, but able to obtain work from the private sector and self-sustainable,” said Shabalala. 

Sibusiso Shabalala of Adapt IT who once benefited in the City’s business development programmes such as exhibiting in the Durban Business Fair said: “The best recipe of the successful business is to focus on one business and to do many things at once, develop a deeper understanding and become an expert on what he/she does.

He said it is very critical to never forget the real reason that made one venture into business because government wants to invest in experts that can innovatively create jobs and tackle poverty using their skills.

“When I founded Adapt IT my vision was to create eThekwini as an IT hub and make a difference by creating employment. I used all the available government platforms available to source knowledge and upgrade my skill and became an expert hence why today KwaZulu-Natal produces the highest number of technicians,” he said.

Shabalala added that his company is now valued at 1.2 billion, they have offices in Cape town, Johannesburg and Durban being their headquarters and now exporting their services and have people based in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. He employs about 550 permanent people.

Vacancies In The Arts 

The PANSA Western Cape Administrative assistant/ coordinator.

Duties will include providing efficient and effective administrative and support functions to ensure the smooth running of PANSA.

The role is primarily an administrative one, and strong numeracy and literacy skills are required. The applicant will be able to demonstrate a better than average knowledge of computerised systems and standard office procedures.

Minimum educational requirements are a Matric exemption certificate with at least five (5) years of relevant experience.

Specific skills required include:

• Experience in a computerised accounting system
• Experience in bookkeeping and accounting procedures
• Experience in a computerised Customer Relationship Management system
• Better than average skills in office productivity software, such as Microsoft Office
• An ability to create and maintain accurate records relating to financial information, including petty cash recons and payment schedules
• Excellent organisational and project management skills
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in at least two of the following languages: Xhosa, English and Afrikaans
• Good inter-personal skills
• A knowledge of, and passion for, the performing arts would be an advantage.

British Council Connect ZA is a project from that is working to connect the new generation of creative professionals and audiences in the UK and South Africa. The project utilises innovative digital techniques in developing programmes of work. Connect ZA reaches new diverse audiences for the arts by working in spaces and places where our audience live and work. Our showcasing develops audiences for work that challenges and updates perceptions of contemporary creativity. Our partners share expertise in working digitally, developing young audiences and supporting new creative careers.

The British Council’s Creative Economy programme forges connections between the growing creative industries in the UK and overseas. Using on-the-ground resources in over one hundred nations, and a global network defined by direct access to policymakers and collaborative dialogue, we co-create programmes to develop cultural enterprise, leadership, skills and infrastructure in partnership with a range of organisations and individuals.

The global arts team is a group of experts in the Arts in the UK and worldwide who build strong external networks and partnerships. Using these networks, working with colleagues across the organisation, they develop international opportunities in four specific priority areas:

- Bringing new UK work to new global audiences

- Developing skills and leadership in the creative sector
- Harnessing the power of arts in achieving international development goals

Accountabilities, responsibilities and main duties:

Other important features or requirements of the job:

Operational project work requires occasional (or sometimes regular) work outside conditioned hours, for example in the evenings or at weekends. TOIL should be agreed with the line manager in advance to maintain an adequate work-life balance. CAMP 2015

The Playhouse Company is holding auditions for performers from community groups who would like to be considered for next year's Community Arts Mentorship Programme (CAMP) which will take place between March and April 2015.

The programme is aimed at actors who have experience in community theatre who wish to develop their skills. Workshops will be held daily from 09h00 to 17h00 and will focus on basic training in a range of drama disciplines, including voice production, acting technique, stage design, script writing and stage management. Please note that daily commitment is required in order to take part.

Auditions will be held in Studio A1 (Playhouse Head Office) at 09h00 on Wednesday 10 December. Those wishing to audition should prepare a poem which they can perform. Please note that you might be required to wait for your audition. For bookings please email:

Main & Mezzanine Galleries: Hortus Conclusis Brunsfelsia: Siobhan O'Reagain Park Gallery: Discovering Home:  Jetteke de Vries Cafe Stairs: Messages for Mandela: Clint Strydom Join the KZNSA on Tuesday 28 October for the opening of three new exhibitions:  In the main and mezzanine galleries Durban artist Siobhan O'Reagain presents  her exhibition Hortus Conclusis Brunsefelsia. This consists of an installation of  beautiful and delicate porcelain works and drawings that reflect her personal  interpretation of the garden, using both fine art and botanical approaches. Jetteke de Vries's Discovering Home, explores the concept of home and what  it means to belong.  The artist takes us on a journey of identity and belonging  which is captured in the lives and narratives of three generations of female  protagonists.   Thanda, a Durban-based non-profit organisation that provides support & education  for children in rural KZN through after-school programmes has collaborated with  local photographer Clint Strydom to present Messages to Mandela.  Thanda  students were asked to write letters to Mandela which have been brought to life  by Clint Strydom's photographs of the children themselves.   The project not only portrays a hopeful and  smiling South Africa but also has  allowed these children to express their heartfelt affection and deep gratitude  for the man they call "Tata Mandela". Shall We Dance 2014

Playhouse Opera Theatre: 5 - 13 September

The Playhouse Opera stage will be alive and kicking with dance talent at the annual showcase of Shall We Dance from 5 – 13 September.

The glitzy showcase featuring eight amateur dance academies will be wowing the crowds with genres from Latin, Argentinian Tango and  Line Dancing, to Belly Dancing, Modern and Ballroom. A flitter of fast feet will dazzle the audience with their displays of quick step, box step, cha-cha, do-si-do, waltz, enchufla, gancho or even a double reverse spin that the amateur dancers will be exhibiting on stage.

The highlights of the show will be the three visiting professional acts from Johannesburg. Exhibition couple Gerhard van Rooyen and Amor Kruger will be igniting the stage with their adagio style. This is a kind of dance where van Rooyen continually picks up Kruger and very cleverly throws her into the air, almost an acrobatic duo with lots of balance and trust involved.

East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard will delight the audience again as the suave eMcee.
