Guitar virtuoso Albert Frost hits the road with a new album

Over the coming weeks, music lovers will be treated to live performances by Albert Frost, South Africa’s pre-eminent guitarist whose unique, genre crossing style has earned him much respect and adoration among audiences and peers for more than two decades.

Frost will be touring the country for the launch of his much anticipated third solo album, The Wake Up, which explores various musical avenues and melds stylistic elements of the blues, rock, psychedelic and African genres to create something he says will surprise and excite his fans.

On The Wake Up, Frost worked instrumentally with acclaimed bassist Schalk Joubert and celebrated drummer Jonno Sweetman, who will accompany him on stage during the tour.

In his performances, Frost promises “diverse material, mostly new, showcased in electric and acoustic set-ups, each with a certain energy”. He adds: “The Wake Up is all about bringing something fresh to the show as well as incorporating the concept throughout the performance.”

Although The Wake Up’s sound is a departure from Frost’s blues roots, having played with legendary South African band The Blues Broers for 21 years, he plans on incorporating some older songs into his tour shows. “There will be one or two tracks from Devils and Gods (his first studio recorded solo album) as well as a blues track or two,” he says.

Frost is excited ahead of the tour, saying: “My sound is changing with this album so I hope people like it as much as I do.

The Wake Up is available to purchase at live gigs and to download on iTunes, Google Play, Deezer and Spotify.

The awards, in their tenth instalment, revealed the winners from the 2014 Sunday Times Generation Next Brand Survey that gauge’s what the South African Youth, aged between 8 and 23 years, deem to be cool. The results of the survey, conducted by Hdi Youth Marketeers, showed that the youth of the country think that Disney is cool in four categories.

Coolest Channels:

For the first time, Disney XD (DStv, Channel 304) landed in the number 1 position as the Coolest Kids TV Channel/Block with the channel ranking tops with kids and teens aged 8-23 years of age. Coming in a close second is Disney Channel (DStv, Channel 303) which is about to celebrate its 8th birthday in South Africa.

Coolest Characters:

Phineas and Ferb, the award-winning animated series on Disney XD and Disney Channel, about two inventing brothers who spend their endless Summer holidays experiencing the biggest adventures, was voted the Coolest Cartoon Show overall for a second year in a row.

The genius brothers also rank as the second Coolest Animated Brand/Entertainment Character across all demographics, but retained the number 1 spot in this category amongst kids 8-13 years of age. Remembering that ‘it all started with a mouse’, this year’s rankings saw Mickey Mouse enter at the number 9 spot in the same category.

The Coolest of the Cool:

Finally, Disney Channel and Disney XD landed in second and third places respectively in the overall Coolest TV ChannelCategory across all demographics. Breaking down the numbers: the channels ranked first (Disney Channel) and second (Disney XD) with kids 8-13 years of age.

Tech News Around SA

Mobile service squad a big hit for Nashua Mobile

Nashua Mobile’s Smart Squad cars are quickly becoming a familiar sight on our roads as every month more people are enjoying the convenience of having cellphone technicians making house calls due to the unique troubleshooting service offered by Nashua Mobile.

If you have a problem with your cellphone, and you are unable to go to a store for help, Nashua Mobile’s Smart Squad will come to you instead. .

Twelve Smart Squad vehicles are operating in Greater Gauteng, Durban, Bloemfontein and Cape Town with a dedicated call centre specialist to set up appointments. The service is free within the central areas covered by the vehicles, with a small call-out fee to cover the costs if the distances are longer.

“The Smart Squads will come to your office or your home and set up your recently purchased smartphone and integrate it with your entire technology eco-system to make sure you are set up and working as quickly as possible,” says Mark Taylor, CEO at Nashua Mobile.

“It’s mostly needed by our newer customers, but it adds value for our existing clients too. From a standing start we have now gone up to 300 call-outs a month and we can handle about 500 a month.”

Although all customers are given expert advice and help with setting up their phones when they initially buy them in store, sometimes people are too busy to stay for that service. Or perhaps they  get home and realise they need help with some other aspects of these increasingly complex devices. That’s exactly why the geeks on wheels are so useful, Taylor says.

“Your new phone will be set up at your office or at home or even while you are on holiday at the coast, so you can get on with the things that are important to you, while we do what is important to us: saving you time, saving you money and putting you first.”
