Master Class: POWER IMPROV FOR THE ACTOR

With Joe Bill

Power Improvisation is an approach to Improvising Characters and Scenes that has been developed by Joe Bill & Mark Sutton, 2 of the co-founders of Chicago’s Annoyance Theater.  It builds on the Annoyance concept: “The best way to take care of your partner in a scene is to take care of your self first. We play from a place of internal emotional power, where knowing HOW you are is knowing WHO you are.  We improvise with ruthless, playful engagement, and always with love and never with fear. The approach advocates endowing your character with a powerful choice at the top of the scene, and then engaging & listening through the integrity of your character as it evolves emotionally, physically and vocally.”

This workshop will focus on the keys to playing a great Improv Scene:  Powerful Opening Moments, Proactive Listening, Reacting Honestly, Playing The 3 Points of Character Focus and Playing the Game of the Scene and The Scene of The Game to forward into the middle and through to the end of the Scene.  We’ll also cover techniques to Manage the Analytical Improviser Brain and Silence the Inner Critic.  Feedback will focus on identifying tendencies and habits that aid or block the keys to successful scenes, as well as opportunities for growth towards becoming a dynamic Improviser.

Improvisers & Actors of all experience levels will find this workshop extremely useful, without feeling hindered by those with less experience or intimidated by those with more experience.  I’ll show you the tools to employ to show up with confidence with ANYONE on stage in Scenic Improvisation or Scenic Game.

Joe Bill is widely regarded as one of the best Teachers of Scenic and Comedic Improvisation in America today.  He currently teaches, performs and does corporate training at iO Chicago, is an Artistic Associate for The Chicago Improv Festival, and acts as an Artistic Adviser for a number of Improvisation and Comedy Theaters all over the U.S. and Canada.  Joe learned his first Improv games in 1977 in High School, then from 1983-85 performed with future life long friends in Dubbletaque, an Improvisation & Sketch Comedy group at Indiana University.  He moved to Chicago in 1985 to study at The Second City with amazing teachers like Martin DeMaat, Michael Gellman, Sheldon Patinkin, Bernie Sahlins and Jeff Michalski.  That year he also began studying at Improv Olympic (now iO Chicago), first with Charna Halpern and then off and on over the next 13 years with legendary Guru of Improvisation, Del Close

Joe and a number of very talented friends co-founded of The Annoyance Theater in Chicago in 1990, under the Artistic Direction of his university friend and comedy genius Mick Napier. Joe and Mark Sutton, his partner in the Nationally Touring Improvised Production BASSPROV (2008 Chicago Improv Festival’s ‘Nichols & May Award’ for Top Improvisational Duo), have evolved the Annoyance approach into POWER IMPROV, which they both have been teaching all over the  U.S., Canada and Europe since 2000.   In March of 2012,  Joe will travel to Cape Town, South Africa where he’s very much looking forward to teaching, directing and performing through the wonderful Cape Town Theater Sports group.
