Glenwood Community Forum Christmas Carols in the Park & Glenwood Night Market:
Bulwer Park, Glenwood: Sat 30 Nov from 5pm
A bumper evening of outdoor festive activity is scheduled for Bulwer Park on Saturday 30 November: a Night Market and a Christmas Pageant.
There will be an original Christmas Pageant, starting at 7pm called Sipho’s Christmas Gift. It is a quaint South African Christmas parable interwoven with a programme of beautifully- chosen carols sung by candlelight.
People are asked to bring picnic blankets and enjoy the show and carols. Supper is available before and after the pageant – the usual Bulwer Market has a special one-off night market which offers outdoor picnic style supper including tasty Lebanese flatbread and curry. There will be an array of stalls offering gift ideas, décor items, arts and crafts on sale.

Pansa needs your help with a coffee table book

The PANSA coffee table book of South African dance is nearing completion, so we are making a last call for contributions of both text and photos. Your voluntary contributions to the book will be much appreciated, and acknowledged in the book. Content we are looking for includes, but is not limited to:
  • written contributions, in the form of history of dance organisations, anecdotes of leading personalities, brief biographies of important and ground-breaking dance practitioners
  • high-resolution digital images of dancers, choreographers, or dance productions
  • insights into the history of contemporary dance in SA, important milestones and personalities, or any other content that you think might be relevant.

All contributions to the book will be treated with the care and attention they deserve. While we cannot guarantee that every photograph or line of text will be included, all contributions used in the book will be acknowledged.

Important legal stuff
By sending the images and/or text to us for inclusion in the book, you warrant that:
1. You are the owner of the complete copyright and all other rights in the material submitted.
2. The content submitted does not infringe any existing copyright or any licence or any other right of any person, organisation or company.
3. The material submitted does not contain plagiarised, obscene or objectionable material or anything of a libellous or scandalous character.

If the content submitted does not belong to you, or is subject to copyright by some other body, you provide full details of such person or organisation to enable us to contact them for permission to use the content.

Final date for last contributions is 31/12/2013.

A HUGE thank you to all those people who have already sent us photos and biographies. The fact that we have already heard from you does not preclude you from sending more photos, or from referring us to other dancers/choreographers or photographers, or referring them to us. The more inclusive we can make the book, while staying within the bounds of contemporary dance, the better.

One last thing that we ask. If any of you have any suggestions of who you think should be asked to write a foreword/introduction, we would like to hear from you. Please include contact details for the person you suggest, and a short motivation as to why you think they should be the person to do it. While we have our own ideas on this (but no consensus as yet) we will consider any suggestions you have. And your suggestion might sway the team one way or the other!

Please email contributions to dancebook@pansa.org.za

FNB's eWallet shows true impact of Africa and Tech News

The FNB eWallet and Africa

FNB’s eWallet is showing strong growth in its African operations with a 119% year-on-year increase in the last financial year. It has also maintained its growth trajectory in South Africa with the total number of eWallets in all countries reaching 2.5 million, an 84% increase on the previous financial year.
“The success of eWallet in South Africa as well as our African operations has proven that there is a pervasive need to send money easily and instantly through a network agnostic mobile money solution,” says Yolande van Wyk, CEO of eWallet Solutions at FNB. “Over the last financial year alone, over R3.2 billion has been sent into eWallets across countries in which the service has been launched. These countries include South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zambia.”
Outside of South Africa two countries in particular have shown very high customer acceptance and take-up. Both Namibia and Botswana’s growth has exceeded expectations with approximately 17% of citizens in Botswana and, in less than a year, over 5% of the population in Namibia receiving money into an eWallet.
“The growth of eWallet in the African subsidiaries has been a lesson in how local conditions effect how people adopt and use a service. We have noticed that Botswana and Namibia’s low population density contributes to the take-up. With a population density of less than four people per square kilometer in both these countries, there is clearly a need to send money across a distance, and eWallet has fulfilled this need,” says van Wyk.
In South Africa there are no discernible corridors as eWallet users tend to send money within a region or province, with Gauteng being the predominant province from which people are sending and receiving money. In Namibia four of these dominant regions have been identified, namely the Khomas, Oshana, Erongo and Otjozondjupa Region. In Botswana, sends mostly originate from the South East Region of Botswana, home to the country’s capital Gaborone.
“Outside of Namibia and Botswana we are still building the eWallet business. Some of our countries such as Zambia and Lesotho are relatively young, and we believe that eWallet will support the growth of the bank in those countries. Also with the expansion of our ATM network, as well as new technologies such as the Slimline* ATMs, we have the potential to grow the eWallet business even further across all countries,” concludes van Wyk.

Interesting Notes:

According to the Mobility 2012 report – World Wide Worx, 51% of the mobile money users in South Africa were FNB eWallet users.
Mobile money involves the use of a cellphone to transfer funds between people and bank accounts, to deposit or withdraw money, to pay bills or to buy services such as airtime and electricity.

Matthew Mole and a purple tortoise called Trouble Claws

Brad Klynsmith (Gangs of Ballet), Matthew Mole and Jonathan Rich (Gangs of Ballet) at the Toy Story Corporate Day Challenge (picture by - Abhi Indrarajan )

“It’s the best place in the world! I love it so much, I come here as often as I can,” says Cape Town-born-now-living-in-Joburg musician, Matthew Mole.

This is why the 22 year old jumped at the chance to head to Durban to help with East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game Corporate Day challenge on 12 November 2013.

The affable, down-to-earth musician, who made South African chart history in July by becoming the first local artist to enter the iTunes album chart at No 1 with his debut, The Home We Built, says he loves being part of initiatives that benefit children.

“My favourite toy growing up, was a little, purple tortoise. I called him Trouble Claws,” beams Matthew as he takes a break from answering the Toy Story pledge lines. “Apparently I was so attached to Trouble Claws, I couldn’t let go of him!”

Which is why Matthew can understand how lonely a childhood can be without a little something special to keep you company, to be your friend, your comfort, your buddy.  Many children in KZN do not have the luxury of owning a new toy. They have never experienced trembling fingers unwrapping a new toy; the shiver of anticipation when presented with a gift; the comfort of something that is completely theirs. This is the story of Toy Story – bringing light, love and even hope to thousands of little ones on the east coast. We raised more than R1 million during our Corporate Day Challenge on Tuesday. The money will be used to provide food for KZN’s underprivileged at the same time as hospital and orphanage toy drop-offs continue.

Matthew has promised to be a part of Toy Story every year as he, like tens of thousands of KZN residents, is determined to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. He has just wrapped up filming the music video for his latest track, Take Yours I’ll Take Mine, which he says was “loads of fun since we shot in 18 different locations in Joburg.”

Despite having legions of fans across the country, Matthew’s feet are firmly on the ground. “I’m not used to this fame game. It’s still a shock when someone comes up to me. I’m still learning how all that works,” says the Toy Story hero, as he goes back to taking calls from other Toy Story heroes.

Disciplines include children’s theatre, film, comedy, drama, physical theatre, dance, cabaret, visual art, performance poetry, music theatre, and the full scope of music genres.

“The 2014 edition of the Festival promises to be a particularly exciting one, with the 40th anniversary of the Festival coinciding with our country marking 20 years of democracy. As always, we’re looking forward to programming a diverse selection of productions, and we’re on hand to help with any queries that artists might have before the closing date,” Fringe Manager Zee Nweba said.

Adult Panto 2013
Romeo and Juliet- an East Coast Story
The Zone Suncoast Casino: 12 November – 31 December
The long-standing theatrical tradition of the saucy festive season adult panto continues – this time the team tip their hat to the greatest love story ever told, Romeo and Juliet,  which will play at The Zone Suncoast from 12 November until 31 December.... except this version is probably not quite what Shakespeare had in mind...
It has long been a tradition in Durban to celebrate the festive season with a trip to the naughty adult pantomime: a well-known story with a decidedly grown up twist,  a smorgasbord of well-known, sing along songs; saucy ensembles; boisterous fun and a fair amount of risqué one-liners. This year it’s one of the world’s most well-known stories  “ Romeo and Juliet- an East Coast Story”  … and needless to say, nothing is sacred. Scripted, directed and choreographed by Darren King.
Booking through Computicket. Block bookings, party groups and enquiries – contact Ailsa on  083 250 2690 / ailswn@mweb.co.za.
Shows are Tues – Sat at 7.30pm; Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are R150 per person. Doors open 90 minutes before for diners. There will be a full bar available. Tables seat 8 people – so book a whole table, or make new friends!  For corporate bookings of 26 tables or more -buffet menus on request. Corporates can buy the whole performance and choose a shorter, condensed “Party pack” version of the show - which is unlikely not to offend anyone!! No under 16s.
