Sibaya helps support maths and science programme in a big way

Sibaya’s Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust extends support for maths and science out-reach programme

Kudzai Mqingwana, Judge Tshabalala, Candice Potgieter and Sunil Geness

Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom, through the Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust, has reaffirmed its commitment to science education and development amongst disadvantaged school learners with a R500 000 funding commitment to KZN Science Centre’s outreach programme for the next year.

A cheque was handed over on Thursday, October 16th at the launch of the Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust Educational Outreach Tour at Enkukwini Primary School. This is the second consecutive year that the Trust has supported the KZN Science Centre which since 2002, has focused on providing experiential learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at under-resourced schools in the KZN region.

The KZN Science Centre is a dynamic education facility that provides curriculum-based learning programmes and exhibitions, outreach-based activities and Science Resource Kits to promote science and maths education. Its staff members are all graduates of science, maths and technology and are passionate about teaching and helping educators and learners access the sciences.

With funding support from Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust in 2013, The KZN Science Centre purchased a mobile science lab which travels to schools that do not have laboratory facilities to conduct workshops with learners and educators. All activities are linked to the curriculum and science kits and material are fully endorsed by the KZN Department of Education.

In the first year of the mobile science lab outreach programme, 50 000 learners were impacted. The KZN Science Centre also trained teachers and resourced science labs. The aim is to reach 34 000 additional learners with this second year of support from Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust.

“We are proud to support the KZN Science Centre’s outreach programme and we are delighted with the progress made in its first year. We consider this to be an important initiative which serves to improve maths and science education in under-resourced schools. The state of maths and science education in South African schools is a growing concern. The system is failing to deliver enough school-leavers equipped with adequate maths and science skills to address the ever-widening skills shortages in most sectors.  The KZN Science Centre does tremendous work in developing these essential skills and has proven to be a great contributor to maths and science education in its region,” says Judge Vuka Tshabalala, Trustee of Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust.

Candice Potgieter, Chief Executive Officer at The KZN Science Centre says: “Our model of supporting learning in schools is well documented in strengthening learners’ exposure and ability in science and maths. The success of our programmes is due to their interactive nature and their alignment to the curriculum. The sustainability of projects like the outreach programme depends heavily on funding received by many generous donors like the Afrisun Community Development Trust. With its support we can extend the reach of the mobile science lab to impact more learners in more schools.”

Individuals and registered arts organisations involved in theatre, dance music, visual arts, craft, literature and multi-discipline have until 12 December 2014 to submit their applications for project funding. This will be the NAC's only round of funding for next year across all seven arts fields.Post-graduate students who wish to pursue their arts studies abroad are also encouraged to apply.

Says NAC CEO Rosemary Mangope: "At the National Arts Council we are committed to changing the landscape of South Africa's creative industries. Key to this transformation is not only supporting SA's existing centres of arts excellence, but also identifying and fostering emerging talent nationwide - those organisations and individuals that will be our future
standard-bearers for the arts, both nationally and internationally.

"In our on-going efforts to ensure the arts are as inclusive as possible, we are particularly keen to encourage funding applications from arts organisations and individuals that support the involvement of women, youth and those living with disabilities. We also welcome applications from students who are not only interested in studying abroad, but also committed to returning to SA to share the knowledge and experience they have gained with their peers."

Successful applications will be notified on 15 April 2015. This year, the NAC awarded grants totalling over R18 million to applicants drawn from all nine South African provinces, plus an additional R9 million in special project funding to 13 flagship arts organisations.

Micro Budget Film Fund

The Durban Film Office is kick-starting their next round of submissions for their Micro Budget Film and Development Film Fund programmes. All emerging Durban filmmakers are urged to submit their film projects for Micro Budget Film Funding before the closing date 7 November 2014 and for the Development Film Fund the 21 November 2014.
Giving local filmmakers a boost with funding and support, the Durban Film Office, the eThekwini Municipality’s developmental arm in the film industry, established the Micro Budget Film and Development Film funding programmes.
The Micro Budget Film programme, of which submission entries close on the 7 November 2014, has been specially created by the Durban Film Office to equip five fiction feature projects from new and emerging filmmakers with a R100 000 grant to assist them in producing their films, as well as provide invaluable insight into learning how to source any additional funding and resources through a micro-budget model. The programme is set out to provide filmmakers with in-depth training on significant production factors such as marketing, sales support, advertising, product placement and sponsorship deals.
Similarly, the Development Film Fund programme, of which submissions close on the 21 November 2014, provides filmmakers with adequate funding and support to produce their films. The Development Film fund programme was established to grant two filmmakers with projects deemed commercially viable and locally and globally competitive with R250 000 funding to assist the production of their projects.
“We encourage aspiring Durban filmmakers to take advantage of these incredible opportunities, as it could be the very break into the film industry they have been working towards. With the support of the Durban Film Office and leading film experts; these programmes will lay the foundations to a successful film making future and take their projects to the next level,” says Durban Film Office’s Toni Monty.
