GenerosiTrees to Inspire the Spirit of Generosity this Festive Season

Donate a toy to a child in need under a Cadbury Dairy Milk GenerosiTree

When Cadbury Dairy Milk discovered that there were millions of orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa – and that the overwhelming majority of them had never known the joy of owning their own toy, book or game, we wanted to make a difference – we enlisted the help of generous South Africans and launched The Little Generosity Shop in May 2019.

So amazing was the response - with more than 90 000 compassionate donations pouring in - that we’ve decided to try make the festive season a little brighter for even more of these incredibly deserving children, with Cadbury Dairy Milk GenerosiTrees.

The items collected by The Little Generosity Shop were donated to various beneficiaries, including the SOS Children's Village (SOS CV), an independent, non-governmental organization that offers family-like care for children and young people who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care. As a childcare and development organization, SOS CV also advocates for the rights of South Africa's most marginalised children.

From 12 November, the GenerosiTree activations will be travelling the country and giving South Africans the opportunity to show that there’s ‘a glass and a half in everyone’ by giving them the chance to donate the items that were once precious to them; teddies to tricycles and books to board games; to this incredibly noble cause.

The GenerosiTree activations will be at Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban (12 – 18 November); Tyger Valley Shopping Centre in Cape Town (26 November – 2 December) and Mall of Africa in Johannesburg (10 – 16 December) and will be rewarding Generosity with Cadbury Dairy Milk slab. There’s also an opportunity to make donations or purchase in-store and online at select Toys R Us stores, with a ‘glass & a half’ reward for their open-heartedness.

How the Cadbury Dairy Milk GenerosiTrees activations work:

Check in at the entrance to the GenerosiTree activation and log your pre-loved toy, book or game for wrapping. One toy, book or game will be exchanged for a Cadbury Dairy Milk slab and up to five slabs for five or more donated items. You can then add even more Generosity by visiting the messaging station, where you can write a message on a tag and attach it to your donation - each child who receives a toy will also get one of these personal and heart-felt messages.

From there, a visit to the Reindeer Room or Santa’s Workshop offers great photo opportunities that you can download and share to help spread the spirit of Generosity, online. Each room offers a unique and immersive experience – the Reindeer Room is decorated with a night sky, lit up with twinkling stars, while you can take pictures with Santa himself in the hustle and bustle of Santa’s Workshop.

Toys R Us Donations:

Consumers who would love to share their spirit of Generosity, but who can’t make it to the three malls which will be home to the GenerosiTrees, can also visit select Toys R Us stores or simply go to the Toys R Us website – to make a donation.

For donations at select Toys R Us stores, simply drop off your pre-loved toy – or something new from the Toys R Us selection if you prefer – in the marked collection bin and claim a Cadbury Dairy Milk slab in return.

If you’d like to make an online donation, visit www.toysrus.co.za and select an item from the Toys R Us catalogue. At checkout, select the option for ‘Cadbury Dairy Milk GenerosiTrees Donation’ and the donated item will be channelled to the Cadbury team to add to the collection. Once the checkout process is complete, you’ll receive a voucher to go claim your Cadbury Dairy Milk slab at a Toys R Us store.

“This festive season, Cadbury Dairy Milk GenerosiTrees will see the donations shared with other deserving charitable organisations which support the millions of children who are growing up without the support of a traditional family, across the country,” says Lara Sidersky, Mondelez SA Category Lead for Chocolate. “Giving is on everyone’s minds during the festive season and we want to remind people that Generosity is driven by selflessly wanting to make an impact on someone else’s day, rather than simply giving for giving’s sake”.

For details of the GenerosiTrees donation points and the Toys R Us partnership go to https://www.cadbury.co.za/festiveseason and follow @CadburyDairyMilkSA on Facebook or @Cadbury_SA on Twitter as well as Instagram and #GlassAndAHalf #Generositrees.

Muizenberg’s Jungle Theatre Company is introducing a new programme of theatre workshops in the New Year for kids aged 8-12, at Alive Café, 11 Atlantic Road, Muizenberg.
The workshops will bring African folktale to life in the ‘now’, through guided improvisation, storytelling, movement, masks, music and dance, Artistic Director Vincent Meyburgh said: “All stories will have indigenous roots and the process will involve a child-centred exploration of environmental issues and local cultures, fostering a heart connection to nature.”
Through engaging the imagination; physical theatre games and exercises; rehearsing and staging a performance, young people will develop soft skills that will help them in all areas of their lives.
Jungle Theatre Company implemented a similar programme at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in 2013 with the story When Lion Could Fly. The script was selected to be part of a collection African Folktales Onstage! to be published by Junkets in the new year.
The workshops begin on 29 January, running for nine consecutive Thursdays 15h30-16h30; the first Saturdays of February and March 10h00-11h00 concluding with a showcase on Saturday 28 March. 700 toys distributed to Durban hospitals

“We are so happy. Thank you for thinking about us.”  She was 11 years old and had been in King George VIII Hospital for the past few weeks, being treated for TB.  The little girl was one of 700 children who received new toys yesterday (Wednesday, 11 December 2013) from the East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game teams.

ECR's Damon Beard at Albert Luthuli Hospital

East Coast Radio presenters Darren Maule, Jane Linley-Thomas, Damon Beard, Leo Masike and Trevor Williams helped distribute toys to children in paediatric wards at King George VIII Hospital. St Aidens Hopsital, Albert Luthuli Hospital, Wentworth Hospital and Clairwood Hospital.

Since the Toy Story campaign was launched at the end of October, thousands of toys have been distributed to underprivileged children in hospitals, homes and orphanages in KZN. Around R1.2 million in cash donations have been received from people all over KZN. This money is being used for food hampers that will help feed children during the December holidays when they will not have access to school meals.

East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game wraps up on Wednesday, 18 December 2013 with the Toy Story Cavalcade, that will see the teams visiting Addington, Kimng Edward, RK Khan and Prince Mshiyeni Hospitals.

More than R1 million raised during Toy Story Corporate Day

Tonight, thousands of east coasters will go to bed as heroes, having helped make a difference to the lives of ill, orphaned and destitute children in KZN. East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game thanks all our un-caped crusaders who have helped us raise a whopping
R1 034 380 during our Toy Story Corporate Day Challenge, 12 November 2013.

(Cameron Delport, Crystalene Nair, Makhosi Khoza and Bianca Warren)

The money will be used to provide meals to primarily child-headed households across KZN. This as Toy Story continues to roll out toy drop-offs at hospitals, children’s homes and orphanages. For many little ones, it’s the first time their little fingers would’ve unwrapped a new toy; the first time they’ve experienced a shiver of excitement when presented with a gift and the first time they have the joy of holding something that is completely theirs.

Damon Beard extended his show for 15 minutes after 6pm to make sure the campaign topped the R1 million mark!

Celebrities from all over South Africa joined East Coast Radio presenters at Suncoast Casino, Hotel and Entertainment to make this possible. The Parlotones, Amazulu players, Gangs of Ballet, celebrity chef Deena Naidoo, The Arrows, Matthew Mole, Patricia Lewis, KZN singer and actor Rory Booth, Dolphins player Cameron Delport, former rugby star Stefan Terblanche, KZN fashion designer Bianca Warren, former rugby star Cedrick Mkhize, KZN Idols hero Crystalene Nair, SA fitness expert Lisa Raleigh, singer and actor Mario Ogle and many others all took time out from their hectic schedules to help answer the Toy Story pledge line and urge corporates and businesses to donate.  Calls came in thick and fast as east coasters opened their wallets and challenged their friends and competitors.

Breakfast show host Darren Maule threw down a titillating challenge of his own: if KZN businesses, corporates and individuals managed to donate over R300,000 by the end of his show at 9am, he will run through Suncoast Casino, Hotel and Entertainment in a speedo. Darren, being a good sport, made good on his promise. Those who witnessed him in his itsy bitsy trunks will sadly never be the same….

East Coast Radio’s Marketing Manager, Renee Burton, says, “Toy Story is about mobilising KZN to own part of the solution to some of the ills that face our children. It might just be one toy but the impact is long-lasting. The support from east coasters has been overwhelming.”

Thank you KZN. You have always given generously to help us make a difference to the children of our province and you didn’t disappoint us this year! We sent out an appeal, and you didn’t just open your hearts to our cause but you opened your wallets too and got your friends, colleagues and competitors to do the same. You have helped us bring light, love and hope to thousands of little ones on the east coast.

If you didn’t get involved in the Corporate Day Challenge, there’s still time to be a hero. Donations can be made until 6 December, via the following means:

How to donate:
1.      Buy a new toy and pop it into a collection box at any Game store in KZN.
2.      Make a cash donation for food parcels online at www.ecr.co.za
3.      Make an electronic transfer via the following:

Branch: Gateway
Branch number: 25 01 08
