New position for Joburg City Theatres

A new position is available for a Deputy General Manager: Joburg City Theatres Hospitality and Catering.

Joburg City Theatres (JCT) is an entity of the City of Johannesburg that stimulates and operates Joburg Theatre (Braamfontein), Roodepoort Theatre and Soweto Theatre in order provide the integrated management of world class African theatre venues and a high quality entertaining, innovative and inclusive programme which serves the diverse communities of the City of Joburg in support of Joburg 2040.

A new position is therefore now available for a DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER: JOBURG CITY THEATRES HOSPITALITY & CATERING (DGMHC01)

The successful applicant will report directly to the General Manager of Hospitality & Catering for Joburg City Theatres, located at Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein. This position involves traveling between all 3 theatres.

Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Management of the day to day hospitality operations for all 3 theatres, Joburg, Roodepoort & Soweto Theatre.
- Draft and implement a marketing strategy for the hospitality operations of Joburg City Theatres
- Maintain a high level of service within all 3 theatres
- Management of the hospitality senior management team
- To assist with the implementation of new menus for food & beverage throughout all 3 theatres
- Design and implement all policies & procedures in the hospitality department and to ensure the effective implementation of these policies and procedures
- Compliance with both monthly and annual operating and capital expenditure budgets
- Ensure that cost of sales are maintained in accordance to the budgets
- Ensure that all controllable expenses are in line in accordance to the budgets
- Manage the hospitality warehouse operations, its systems and controls
- Reporting on a regular and standardised basis to the General Manager for Joburg City Theatres
- Setting and maintaining world class operating standards in both the customer and client services of the theatre

Education and experience required:
- A diploma in hospitality management or Culinary arts; a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in a similar position
- A passion for involvement within the hospitality industry
- Exceptional leadership qualities and business proficiency
- High levels of proficiency in written and verbal communications in the English language.
- Experience in point of sales systems i.e. Micros, GAAP, Pilot is essential
- Experience in Pastel is essential

- Ability to perform under stress
- Ability to work without supervision
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate at all levels with tact and diplomacy

- A long-term knowledge of the hospitality and catering industry would be an advantage.

The National Arts Council (NAC) opens applications for 2015 arts funding

Individuals and registered arts organisations involved in theatre, dance, music, visual arts, craft, literature and multi-discipline have until 12 December 2014 to submit their applications for project funding. This will be the NAC’s only round of funding for next year across all seven arts fields. Post-graduate students who wish to pursue their arts studies abroad are also encouraged to apply.

Breathing life into African stories at Alive Café in 2015

Muizenberg’s Jungle Theatre Company is introducing a new programme of theatre workshops in the New Year for kids aged 8-12, at Alive Café, 11 Atlantic Road, Muizenberg.

The workshops will bring African folktale to life in the ‘now’, through guided improvisation, storytelling, movement, masks, music and dance, Artistic Director Vincent Meyburgh said: “All stories will have indigenous roots and the process will involve a child-centred exploration of environmental issues and local cultures, fostering a heart connection to nature.”

Through engaging the imagination; physical theatre games and exercises; rehearsing and staging a performance, young people will develop soft skills that will help them in all areas of their lives.

Jungle Theatre Company implemented a similar programme at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in 2013 with the story When Lion Could Fly. The script was selected to be part of a collection African Folktales Onstage! to be published by Junkets in the new year.

The workshops begin on 29 January, running for nine consecutive Thursdays 15h30-16h30; the first Saturdays of February and March 10h00-11h00 concluding with a showcase on Saturday 28 March. The programme costs R750 per child. Spaces are limited. The deadline for registration and payment is Monday 26 January. 700 toys distributed to Durban hospitals

“We are so happy. Thank you for thinking about us.”  She was 11 years old and had been in King George VIII Hospital for the past few weeks, being treated for TB.  The little girl was one of 700 children who received new toys yesterday (Wednesday, 11 December 2013) from the East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game teams.

East Coast Radio presenters Darren Maule, Jane Linley-Thomas, Damon Beard, Leo Masike and Trevor Williams helped distribute toys to children in paediatric wards at King George VIII Hospital. St Aidens Hopsital, Albert Luthuli Hospital, Wentworth Hospital and Clairwood Hospital.

Since the Toy Story campaign was launched at the end of October, thousands of toys have been distributed to underprivileged children in hospitals, homes and orphanages in KZN. Around R1.2 million in cash donations have been received from people all over KZN. This money is being used for food hampers that will help feed children during the December holidays when they will not have access to school meals.

East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game wraps up on Wednesday, 18 December 2013 with the Toy Story Cavalcade, that will see the teams visiting Addington, Kimng Edward, RK Khan and Prince Mshiyeni Hospitals.

More than R1 million raised during Toy Story Corporate Day

Tonight, thousands of east coasters will go to bed as heroes, having helped make a difference to the lives of ill, orphaned and destitute children in KZN. East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game thanks all our un-caped crusaders who have helped us raise a whopping

The money will be used to provide meals to primarily child-headed households across KZN. This as Toy Story continues to roll out toy drop-offs at hospitals, children’s homes and orphanages. For many little ones, it’s the first time their little fingers would’ve unwrapped a new toy; the first time they’ve experienced a shiver of excitement when presented with a gift and the first time they have the joy of holding something that is completely theirs.

Damon Beard extended his show for 15 minutes after 6pm to make sure the campaign topped the R1 million mark!

Celebrities from all over South Africa joined East Coast Radio presenters at Suncoast Casino, Hotel and Entertainment to make this possible. The Parlotones, Amazulu players, Gangs of Ballet, celebrity chef Deena Naidoo, The Arrows, Matthew Mole, Patricia Lewis, KZN singer and actor Rory Booth, Dolphins player Cameron Delport, former rugby star Stefan Terblanche, KZN fashion designer Bianca Warren, former rugby star Cedrick Mkhize, KZN Idols hero Crystalene Nair, SA fitness expert Lisa Raleigh, singer and actor Mario Ogle and many others all took time out from their hectic schedules to help answer the Toy Story pledge line and urge corporates and businesses to donate.  Calls came in thick and fast as east coasters opened their wallets and challenged their friends and competitors.

Breakfast show host Darren Maule threw down a titillating challenge of his own: if KZN businesses, corporates and individuals managed to donate over R300,000 by the end of his show at 9am, he will run through Suncoast Casino, Hotel and Entertainment in a speedo. Darren, being a good sport, made good on his promise. Those who witnessed him in his itsy bitsy trunks will sadly never be the same….

East Coast Radio’s Marketing Manager, Renee Burton, says, “Toy Story is about mobilising KZN to own part of the solution to some of the ills that face our children. It might just be one toy but the impact is long-lasting. The support from east coasters has been overwhelming.”

Thank you KZN. You have always given generously to help us make a difference to the children of our province and you didn’t disappoint us this year! We sent out an appeal, and you didn’t just open your hearts to our cause but you opened your wallets too and got your friends, colleagues and competitors to do the same. You have helped us bring light, love and hope to thousands of little ones on the east coast.
