Call For Proposals For Infecting The City 2015 Cape Town

Infecting The City 2015

The Africa Centre is calling for proposals for Infecting The City Public Arts Festival that will be held from the 9th – 14th March 2015.

Infecting The City unfolds on the streets and various other public spaces in the Central Business District of Cape Town. The Festival provides an unusual opportunity for art, music, dance and performance to leave the confines of theatres and galleries to engage with or disrupt Cape Town’s daily activities.  The Festival's programme challenges audiences, pushes boundaries, shifts perspectives and helps to make sense of the public spaces we occupy.

After its most successful year in 2014 with 54 productions, 440 participating artists, and 32,000 audience members, this call is for works from two categories: New Works and Restaged Works.  Visual, performing artists and practitioners from other disciplines are invited to submit. The work can be a full ensemble piece, intervention, live performance, installation, video, totally interactive or some other form newly imagined. All works should translate to or work within a public environment, and actively engage intentional and incidental audiences alike.  For more details about the call, time frames and process go to the webpage.  The deadline for this submission is the 15th August 2014 at 17h00. The short list will be released in mid-September 2014. Please watch the Facebook page for more announcements.

Highlights From The Hookup Dinner Durban

Last night  I attended the inspiring Hookup Dinner.

This time the venue was GagasiFM which is situated in New Town Centre in Umhlanga Ridge.
There were many entrepreneurs in attendance and a few even pitched their business.  We heard from Events Companies and even a man who provides wedding and funeral insurance.

Our guest speakers were from the government and they showed us the intricacies of the tender world.

Here are some of the tips they shared with us:

  • Remember to sign your tender, you will be surprised how many people forget to do that.
  • Make sure you have your BEE Certificate and Tax Certificate, you will need it.
  • Try not to be a jack of all trades, just focus on one niche.
  • If you say you are experienced in a field you can be sure you will be asked if you have experience in that field.
  • Try not to just provide a service, the government also wants to see that you will provide some sort of development opportunities for the future generations.
  • There are many opportunities coming up for entrepreneurs including the building of a new museum and a possible Film Studio.
  • The City of Durban has a website where you can register on their supplier database.  You will need to do this if you want to tender, here is a link to their website: http://www.durban.gov.za/City_Government/Administration/Administrative%20Clusters/treasury/supply_chain_management/Application_City_Database/Pages/default.aspx

A great time was had by all the entrepreneurs and congratulations to Sphamandla who won the pitching session.

Will you win next time?

The Hookup Dinner has events countrywide.

Youth Day Seminar

In honour of the 1976 youth activists, who led the Soweto uprising which escalated into a nation-wide revolt, revitalising the struggle for liberation in South Africa, eThekwini Municipality’s Local History Museum will host a Youth Day Seminar under the theme “Celebrating the 1976 Youth: Empowering the Current Youth”.

Various organisations will give talks aimed at empowering the youth with skills that can help them better their lives and get involved in the business world.

The National Youth Development Agency will explain their role in developing the youth and how their services can be accessed.

While the Municipality’s Community Participation Unit will present the eThekwini Youth Development Policy and the services they render to the youth.

Young budding entrepreneurs will also be guided on how they can register their companies on the Municipal database and do business with the Municipality.

The keynote speaker, Mr Ndwankulu Tshishonga from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, will speak about the lessons the youth today could derive from the youth of 1976 so they can be active citizens who are able to solve problems and positively contribute to South Africa’s democracy.

In 1976 the youth protested against the introduction of Afrikaans to be used as the medium of instruction alongside English in schools.

The rise of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) and the formation of South African Students Organisation (SASO) raised the political consciousness of many students while others joined the wave of anti-Apartheid sentiment within the student community.

The seminar also seeks to reaffirm the role that can be played by the youth in society to ensure a better South Africa.

The Seminar is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 18/06/14

After a countrywide series of auditions due to take place in June, the sixth annual ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Performing Arts Scholarships will culminate in a Final performance, allowing the six finalists the opportunity to showcase their acting, dancing and singing abilities to a live audience and an independent panel of judges. Performed in the format of a variety show, the showcase of their talents needs to be brought together by a charismatic presenter into a seamless performance for the audience and judges to enjoy. The finalists will be competing to win one of three performing arts scholarships, with a combined value of R315 000. The event, hosted by UJ Arts & Culture at the University of Johannesburg, will take place on 13 October 2014.

“Deciding to audition means that you have already completed the most daunting step,” says Altovise Lawrence, host of the 2013 Scholarship Awards Finals. “Being awarded the chance to be the ACT Scholarship Awards MC for 2013 was the opportunity for me to push myself to the limit. It was a gift and I was given a chance to showcase my talent on one of the biggest stages in my career thus far. The most important lessons that I walked away with was that it requires a team to see a vision through - that I do not have all the answers and that as people, it really makes a difference when we listen more.”

“The ability to captivate an audience and take them through a journey that keeps them engaged is increasingly becoming a highly sought skill and career path. As a bank for all, Nedbank is committed to providing such opportunities to young and talented people who want to make their dreams happen” explains Maseda Ratshikuni, Head: Nedbank Cause Marketing. “We have been so impressed with previous MCs of the Scholarship Awards, that they have been approached to take on further work for Nedbank and other corporates.”

The Walt Disney Company Africa is proud to share the news that its television channels, Disney Channel (DStv, Channel 303) and Disney XD (DStv, Channel 304), as well as its iconic characters have received the thumbs up from South Africa’s youth at the 2014 Sunday Times Generation Next Awards announced last night, Thursday 29 May.

The awards, in their tenth instalment, revealed the winners from the 2014 Sunday Times Generation Next Brand Survey that gauge’s what the South African Youth, aged between 8 and 23 years, deem to be cool. The results of the survey, conducted by Hdi Youth Marketeers, showed that the youth of the country think that Disney is cool in four categories.

Coolest Channels:

For the first time, Disney XD (DStv, Channel 304) landed in the number 1 position as the Coolest Kids TV Channel/Block with the channel ranking tops with kids and teens aged 8-23 years of age. Coming in a close second is Disney Channel (DStv, Channel 303) which is about to celebrate its 8th birthday in South Africa.

Coolest Characters:

Phineas and Ferb, the award-winning animated series on Disney XD and Disney Channel, about two inventing brothers who spend their endless Summer holidays experiencing the biggest adventures, was voted the Coolest Cartoon Show overall for a second year in a row.

The genius brothers also rank as the second Coolest Animated Brand/Entertainment Character across all demographics, but retained the number 1 spot in this category amongst kids 8-13 years of age. Remembering that ‘it all started with a mouse’, this year’s rankings saw Mickey Mouse enter at the number 9 spot in the same category.

Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo said that the Durban Business Fair plays a major role in the economic growth and development of the City’s economy. “With this year’s theme: Connecting Business Fair globally, the Municipality has earmarked major projects working in partnerships with the private sector. He added that some of these major projects include new infrastructure investments to support development in the north, particularly around the Dube Trade Port Special Economic Zone and along the N3 corridor, the new dig-out port and many more.

The successfully hosting of regional business fairs in three regions of the Municipality, affirmed the importance of creating enabling participatory environments for small businesses, large corporate and government departments.

Head of Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit, Philip Sithole, says that the importance of SMMEs and their contribution to economic growth has long been recognised and now enjoys a newly established Ministry headed by the Minister Lindiwe Zulu.
